With no clear visibility on the extent of impact that the COVID-19 pandemic would bring on the system, SAVW took the first and most important step towards supporting the medical infrastructure. Starting off with a financial aid of Rs 1 crore rupees, SAVW engaged in developing a COVID-19 facility at the Sassoon General Hospital in Pune. The contribution was made towards medical consumables and critical care equipment for the medical team and the patients infected by the Coronavirus. Over 35,000 sanitisers were donated to hospitals in Pune, Aurangabad and Mumbai and over 50,000 food packets were distributed in the Aurangabad region. The company also distributed face masks, gloves, disinfectants, clinical thermometers, protective goggles and clothing to the medical forces that are fighting the virus from the frontline.
Putting its manufacturing prowess to the right use, SAVW’s factory in Chakan, Pune produced reusable face shields for the doctors and medical staff taking care of COVID-19 patients. These face shields were approved by Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, dean of Sassoon General Hospital and were certified for both indoor and outdoor use. The transparent sheet that forms the shield can be sanitised after six to eight hours before it is used again. Over 12000 units were supplied to Hospitals in Pune, Aurangabad, Beed and Latur.
Not only did SAVW utilise its supply chain to organise the delivery of these equipment, it also imported necessary medical equipment into India through parent company Volkswagen AG in Europe. The medical equipment included FFP3 respirators developed using 3D printer by Skoda Auto in collaboration with the Czech Technical University in Prague.
From the people, to the people
The measures undertaken by SAVW were not limited to the company’s funds being utilized for the distribution of medical supplies. In a heartwarming effort, all the employees of SAVW united together to raise an additional Rs 1.2 crore by forgoing their salary of a day. This fund was then utilized in sourcing 5 full-featured ventilators, 15 monitors and 3,750 PPE kits for COVID-19 hospitals in Mumbai, Pune and Aurangabad.
SAVW also distributed 21 tonnes of dry ration to needy families in Khed and Bhosari villages in Maharashtra and has also donated additional essential medicines to Sassoon General Hospital (Pune) worth ₹22.34 lakhs.
In 2017, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India had supported Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in setting up a Centre for Pediatric Orthopedics called ‘Blooming Buds’. Since its inauguration, the Centre has provided consultation to over 2000 children in the age group of 0-18 years.
Dr. Ashish and his team have conducted more than 200 surgeries including one on a three week old baby with deformed knee. The surgeries have helped these young children lead a normal life, join school, play, and pursue their extra-curricular activities
